How Long Does Grieving Take; Is Something Wrong with Me?

child loss suicide how long to grieve life after suicide life after suicie loss loss of son suicide grief suicide loss suicide loss survivor Sep 06, 2022

In a "Down the Rabbit Hole" podcast episode in life after a suicide loss, I talked about the NY Times article from this past week (March 18, 2022) that has caused quite a stir amongst grievers and the therapeutic world alike.

Everyone - I mean EVERY one that read it - had an opinion and MOST people lost their mind a bit. And I get it! WHO do they think they are deciding on a master timeline for grief. How is that even possible?? What has happened is that the psychological community has added a disorder to the DSM-5 called Prolonged Grief Disorder. In the DSM-5, after a year (yes, a year) if you are still deemed to be in a state of 'incapacitated pining and ruminating' a year after loss. It even qualifies it as saying someone who fails to return to previous activities. WHOA .... I mean, right??

So, I hope you will take a listen HERE and come with me as I take a shallow dive into the deep end on my thoughts (yes, it's just my opinion) and even I surprise myself a bit on where I land - well, at least where I might land (it's really too early to say!)

What do you think? Take a look at the article HERE and tell me what you think. Good conversation - persistent and consistent conversation about these hard topics IS how we will make progress and move the needle.

I do know that this is a lonely and helpless grief and that we need support, tools and other grievers to get through this successfully so, I have also included this LINK that takes you to the signing up space to get started in our very own "Picking up the Pieces" Community HERE. It's in the beginning phase so dive on in now and help to make it exactly what you need!
